Learning outcomes

About Wood

Essential theory of wood, identify common species available, understand types of processed wood products such as plywood, block board etc., How to identify quality of plywood, and when to use plywood vs solid wood.

Power Tools

You will learn to use a number of power tools such as table saw, mitre saw, jig saw, planer, bench router, hand-held router, cordless drill and drivers, nail gun, sanders, and many shop-made machines and jigs

Hand Tools

Learning how to use hand tools is fundamental to woodworking. You will learn a number of hand tools and techniques for measurement and marking. Emphasis is on learning to use the saw, chisels and jack plane.

Finishing

A large number of finishing techniques will be taught, starting with shaping and efficient sanding. You will learn to apply various types of finishes to the completed item. Emphasis is on using oil and other safe finishes

Experience A BOUTIQUE FURNITURE MAKING STUDIO

You will be working in a boutique furniture making studio, equipped with state of the art machinery and tools.

You will be assigned a dedicated workbench for the duration of the course.

You will be given expert guidance and tips throughout the course, to help you make an item that you will be proud of. 

You will be briefed and monitored for safe working practices at every step of the making process.

You will be learning from a professional furniture maker.

WORKSHOP SAFETY IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT​

Working with hand tools and power tools can be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken

You will undergo a detailed safety orientation at the beginning of the workshop, and several reminders as required.

Safety glasses and ear muffs are available for use during the workshop. Nitrile gloves will be provided while applying finish. You should bring their own mask and wear them while using power tools that generate wood dust.

You must sign a safety declaration form before the start of the workshop – this is a mandatory prerequisite. Please bring a signed copy on the first day of the class.

 

CLOTHING 

It is important to dress in safe wear while working in a workshop – Long pants/ jeans/ shorts and half-sleeve T-shirts/ shirts/ tops. Full sleeves, flowing fabrics and loose-fitting outfits are not allowed. Shoes are mandatory. Long hair must be tied in a ponytail or a bun.
