Small parts storage

There are way too many small parts in a workshop. Murphy’s law kicks in when you need a specific item and a lot of time gets wasted searching. I repurposed a vertical shoe shelf (similar to the IKEA ones) to be used as a catch-all storage for hardware, fasteners and everything that needs a dedicated home.

Design

I decided on building removable shelves that aren’t very deep (max 3″) for the majority of the drawers. I might have a few wider, deeper ones for larger items. No hardware, just a semi-circular hole to pull out the drawer. The undersides will be coated with a film of wax to let them slide easily in and out. KISS design!

Build

Since this is a shop project I went with MDF and simple butt joints – glue and brad nails. I made an assembly jig to ensure I get right-angle corners and the assembly process goes through fast.

Dimensioning so many pieces was a pain in all the wrong places. I mean the ears, eyes and nose that I covered; MDF dust is nasty.

A round of sanding and some spray varnish and the boxes went in to their shelves.

Installation

Loading up took a lot of time but it looks neat and tidy. I contemplated putting a label on each, but haven’t decided on it. If I do I would want t to be easily replaceable. I think a self-adhesive label would mar the MDF surface when removed. Do you have a better suggestion? Let me know in the comments below

How's it Used

WORKSHOP SAFETY IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

Working with hand tools and power tools can be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken

You will undergo a detailed safety orientation at the beginning of the workshop, and several reminders as required.

Safety glasses and ear muffs are available for use during the workshop. Nitrile gloves will be provided while applying finish. You should bring their own mask and wear them while using power tools that generate wood dust.

You must sign a safety declaration form before the start of the workshop – this is a mandatory prerequisite. Please bring a signed copy on the first day of the class.

CLOTHING

It is important to dress in safe wear while working in a workshop – Long pants/ jeans/ shorts and half-sleeve T-shirts/ shirts/ tops. Full sleeves, flowing fabrics and loose-fitting outfits are not allowed. Shoes are mandatory. Long hair must be tied in a ponytail or a bun.
